Coincidentally, Manoj Bajpayee and Pankaj Tripathi, who played rivals in the epic Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012, have also been in courtroom dramas this year that use Hinduism to change society. Bajpayee borrows from mythology in Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai(on ZEE5), a good but self-important movie, to bring a terrible godman to justice. In OMG 2, Tripathi’s strategies are largely the same. He also contributes a comedic softness that is unmistakably the actor’s own. With a contented smile and a soft voice, his persona quotes the Kamasutra, Khajuraho, and Panchatantra. When he occasionally raises his volume in court, it causes laughter.

OMG 2 Review

OMG Two follows In the 2012 satire OMG – Oh My God!, starring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Mithun Chakraborty, organized religion was mocked. Only Kumar and the valiant Govind Namdev remain in the sequel; Rawal and Chakraborty, both former lawmakers, have left. The new movie’s emphasis is on sex education in schools rather than religion, which explains why the producers requested a UA certificate. After making numerous revisions, the censor board gave it a “A” (Adult) classification. Additionally, it allegedly changed Kumar’s portrayal of Lord Shiva to that of a type of divine “messenger” (there is already a rival franchise with that moniker, which stars a convicted felon).

Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi), the main character in OMG 2, is a devoted merchant at a Hindu Shiva temple in Ujjain. From the awnings and bunting on the temple grounds to the marigolds and tilaks that are shared during prayer, he greets us in a blossom of orange. Kanti, his wife, and their two children reside in accommodations provided by the temple. Up until the day his son Vivek gets expelled from school, it is a straightforward, quiet existence. After being persuaded by some bullies that he has a little appendage, the boy developed a serious case of masturbation, as discovered by Kanti. The same kids later caught him in the act on camera and posted the footage online.

Kanti is warned by a psychiatrist (Brijendra Kala) that children who learn about masturbation go through crippling episodes of remorse. This is shown to us in real-time as Vivek attempts suicide and is saved by a stranger with dreadlocks and a kind smile. This is Kumar, a Shiva emissary who was summoned from the second floor to provide spiritual assistance. At his urging, Kanti, who acknowledges he hasn’t been the best father, files a lawsuit against his son’s school as well as all the con artists and miracle workers who have deceived his son. He also sues himself since he believes he is equally at fault. A judge (Pavan Malhotra) and a suave defense attorney (Yami Gautam Dhar) are observing in disbelief.

Kanti frequently ends his court arguments with a more important point after starting out foolish and basic. He emphasizes the importance of sex and sexual health in Indian civilization by citing ancient writings. To the film’s credit, it doesn’t feel weighty even though it continues to broaden the scope of the subject. Tripathi performs a Ted Lasso impersonation (both in its cheeriness and inherent irritability). The movie takes a decidedly lighthearted tack. When the audience has laughed a little and the tension has subsided, the movie assumes that a bigger realization can dawn. Rai is OK with his audience laughing at terminology like “hast-main” and “sex worker.”

The movie makes liberal use of Hinduism in its defense of the liberalism found in Hindu philosophy. Kumar appears to enjoy dressing up as Shiva; a white bull always accompanies him. We get a picture of a trident, a shiv lingam, or a framed image of God every ten minutes or so. Malhotra’s judge tries to object, huffs and then gives up as Kanti transforms the courtroom into a metaphorical temple. The Sanskrit word “karma,” which is used frequently and means sexual desire and pleasure, is used to describe the character Kamini played by Yami Gautam.

But the movie takes just as much care. Kanti makes reference to a liberal and forward-thinking past—”When the world was taking baby steps, our Sanatan Hindu religion was soaring,” he adds with pride—but the references to homosexuality in ancient Indian writings are never mentioned, not even in passing. His message that “sex education is important” infuriates conservative organizations from all major religions; we see clergy from the three major faiths demonstrating together on television. OMG 2 is a superior film to Ram Setu because it is honest and charming, but it also uses predictable Macaulay-bashing at the end to highlight the problems with Indian society.

The CGI also appears shoddy, and the film’s editing and shooting could have been improved. As Kanti’s easily alarmed wife, Geeta Agarwal Sharma is entertaining. So is Kumar at times; on one occasion, he inebriatedly sings “Udja Kale Kawan” from Gadar, the noisy and violent sequel to OMG 2. Sunny Deol’s characters know how to get their point across. Let’s listen to Pankaj Tripathi as well, though.
