It mashes together the worlds and characters from several Mario games into one storyline. 

It’s also the first movie to showcase Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Junior in addition to Mario and Luigi. The animation is beautiful, and the worlds are exactly how they look in the video games.

However, the film has an issue with storytelling that makes it a bit of a bore for most audiences. The Super Mario Bros relies on a simple narrative that’s easy to understand but difficult to get involved with. 

Mario is on a mission to save Princess Peach from Bowser and he will overcome all the enemies and obstacles that get in his way. It’s a formula that has been used by the many other Nintendo-based video game movies that have been made.

The film tries to mix in some comedy by adding the adorable Luma, an alien star-shaped creature that yearns for oblivion and whose pratfalls are big laughs for kids. 

It also tries to mix in some action by including long sequences lifted from the games where Mario and his friends fling hammers, run around gravity-defying aerial assault courses, or drive racing cars along a rainbow.

Often, when a filmmaker attempts to rework a video game into a movie, it falls flat because the film fails to keep up with the pace of the games. While it’s nice to see some nods to the history of the games, these sequences slow the film down and distract from what should have been its main storyline.

Produced by Illumination founder/CEO Chris Melisandre and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the computer-animated film also stars Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. 

The film has already passed the $500 million mark in North American theatres and is the highest-grossing video game-inspired movie of all time.

Video games’ most beloved franchise has taken to the big screen in a movie that’s sure to please both gamers and non-gamers alike. 

The Super Mario Bros.
