As a vacation photographer, the opportunity to capture images underwater always thrills me because it’s a completely different world with amazing aquatic landscapes, marine life, vegetation, and wildlife. Whether I’m snorkeling in a tropical environment or creating art in an alpine lake, taking underwater images is both thrilling and challenging. Having a camera that can survive submersion is essential. Throughout my career, I have utilized a variety of underwater cameras, from disposable film models to my dependable action and point-and-shoot cameras.
I recently traveled to St. Lucia, Banff National Park, and the Adirondack Mountains in my backyard to test out a few new models and evaluate their use, performance, design, usefulness, durability, and value. Best for Video
I’ve used a variety of GoPro action camera models, from snorkeling in the Maldives to swimming with sharks in Tahiti, and I can vouch for the Hero 12 Black being the greatest to yet. The camera’s tiny size makes it ideal for travel, and I love the floaty accessories that come with it for better hold and control when swimming underwater. Among the significant improvements this model has over its predecessors are video stabilization, a longer battery life, and sharp, high dynamic range (HDR), which produces better-quality images and video clips with vibrant colors.
I tested this model in the Adirondack Mountains, Banff National Park, and most recently, the most remote national park in Tasmania, St. Lucia (see picture below). Because it can record 5.3K video, it’s my favorite option for filming in and out of the water in situations where it can get splashed. The front screen is helpful for capturing selfies and placing myself in the frame of a photo, but only the rear panel has a touchscreen.
This device is waterproof up to 33 feet, which is a rather reasonable depth, though certain scuba divers may find it limiting. Purchasing a second protective case that allows you to submerge up to 196 feet can solve this. The 27MP resolution works well even if the sensor size was not changed in this version. Compared to the previous design, which positioned the camera on the additional clip-in shell, the bottom folding mount mechanism is an improvement.

Best for Action Shots
I was satisfied with the DJI Osmo Action 4’s lengthy battery life, quick-release magnetic attachments, and image and video quality. The last thing you want when you need to quickly switch is to fumble with unscrewing and rescrewing the camera into an attachment, which could cause you to miss the picture. For this reason, this magnetic feature is highly useful. This camera is lightweight and small, much like the GoPro, and it was easy to set up and use.
But I had to look for a way to disable the loud beep that happens when a photo is taken (to adjust the volume, slide down and touch the gear icon). I felt embarrassed to use it in public because the default “loud” setting is so incredibly loud.
The full front screen option is great if you’re planning a shoot where you’ll be in the frame. I truly love touchscreens since they allow me to quickly access and navigate between menu items. The camera’s 59-foot waterproof range is helpful for divers who go really deep. Although I typically don’t need much more, the maximum video resolution is 4K.

OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 Black Underwater Camera
The OM System Tough TG-7 Digital Camera was actually very sturdy, which made it ideal for travel. It has double-sealing locks on the ports, memory card, and battery to keep moisture out. These locks function properly, but because of their small size, they can be a bit difficult to open and close. It was easy to set up this camera, especially if you have experience with point-and-shoot cameras.
When I went my dog down to the Adirondacks’ river and lake to take shots of her playing fetch in the water, I felt that this camera didn’t keep up with her speed as well as I would have liked. She moves swiftly, therefore some of the photos were blurry due to the shutter lag. There are settings (auto, custom, and underwater) that make it easy for beginners to use, even though I found the white balance in the default option to be a little odd. The 4K/30 frames per second maximum video capability was sufficient for someone wishing to record some memories, but a more experienced photographer would probably find them unimpressive. It doesn’t have a touchscreen. The wrist strap is appreciated, and I like how lightweight, slim, and portable this camera is.
